DESCRIPTION: LM-10 Tommy Johnson Artist Model. Let’s face it, what DIDN’T Tommy Johnson do?!? Mr. Johnson was a “first-call” tubaist at the major motion picture studios in Hollywood and recorded soundtracks for over 2000 movies dating back to 1958. Some of these movies include Robin Hood, Back to the Future 1, 2, &3, Jaws 1,2,3, & 4, Indiana Jones, Star Trek I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VIII and IX, The Natural, The Godfather 1, 2, & 3, Alien III, Batman Returns, Die Hard 1 & 2, Crimson Tide, Lethal Weapon I, II, III & IV, A few Good Men…Well, you get the point. He performed as a tuba soloist with the Los Angeles Wind Ensemble, the LA Tuba Quartet, and with the Henry Mancini Orchestra. In 1981 he was awarded the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences “Emeritus Most Valuable Tuba Player”.
Model LM-10 is a monster! It is modeled after the very mouthpiece that Mr. Johnson was using in the Hollywood studios on movie soundtracks week after week after week until his passing. If you’re looking for a fast attack without having a mouthpiece that’s too bright, the LM-10 will “light up” your horn like no other. The rim has a wide inner diameter and is very cushioned (much like the C4 rim). The design of the rim and the mouthpiece is similar to a Miraphone C4 or a Marcinkiewica N4. If you like a wide cushioned rim with a medium cup, look no further. You’re home!
    STAINLESS STEEL versus BRASS MOUTHPIECES
The low brass mouthpiece world is moving to Stainless Steel. Comparing a Stainless Steel mouthpiece to a brass mouthpiece is a lot like comparing a flip phone to an iphone. We all thought the flip phone was great until we checked out our first iphone.
Stainless steel reduces the vibrations of your mouthpiece giving you, the performer, the best possible playing experience. To reduce vibration, you need harder metal. Stainless steel is much harder than brass. The yellow brass used to make silver plated brass mouthpieces has an average hardness of 58. 304L-grade stainless steel used to make LOUD mouthpieces has an average hardness of 140. LOUD mouthpieces are more than double the hardness of yellow brass, silver plated mouthpieces!
When you play your brass instrument, the mouthpiece vibrates as your embouchure vibrates. When you play louder it vibrates more, creating an “edge” in your sound and limiting your loudest dynamics. The more your mouthpiece vibrates, the less sound and energy go through your horn.
Switching from brass to Stainless Steel helps you gain projection (LOUD) and stamina! Many musicians who switch to LOUD mouthpieces realize that it takes a lot less effort to play because they aren’t having to fight their mouthpiece. You can focus on your music instead of lipping-up on notes or lipping-down, backing off etc.
NOTE: This is new from the factory. I had sold several mouthpieces a couple of years ago that was the remainder of the finished inventory. They had a few mouthpieces in process which they have now finished. See pictures. This mouthpiece recently sold for 0 at ebay auction. This price is a steal!
